Hathigaon (or elephant village) is situated at the foothill of the Amber Palace and Fort near Jaipur which was constructed in the 16thcentury by Rajput King Man Singh.
Located nearby is the village of Amer after which the Amer fort is named. But another thing, which makes the village special today are the number of elephants it houses. About 110 elephants are taken care of here by the mahouts or elephant riders of the village.
2008:
Shyam Gupta
, who owns four elephants there, said: "There is a 25% to 30% reduction in our earnings due to the drop in tourist flow this season. This comes in the backdrop of the rising cost of commodities and made life difficult for us."
Another elephant owner
Haji Karim Khan
said, "We have to earn at least Rs 2,000 a day to sustain the business. I have six elephants, taking the average maintenance cost to around Rs 6,000 per day."
"We are not earning enough either to feed ourselves or the animals," said Naimuddeen, another elephant owner. "It has been a bad year for tourism. The state was in the limelight for all wrong reasons".
2015: As per the Counter Affidavit filed by the Rajasthan Forest Department in W.P(C) No. 743 of 2014 (“Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre and Ors. versus Union of India and Ors.”), there were 132 privately owned captive elephants in Rajasthan in January 2015.
2016: In January 2016, the official database showed the population as 110 captive elephants.
2017: In October 2017, details of 103 captive elephants were sent to AWBI for registration under PARR, 2001.
