Comments / picturesEstablished in 1956, the camp is located in Indira Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary and National Park and was used for elephants previously located at Sungam.

This camp for 21 domesticated elephants used in conflicts between man and elephant in the nearby Valparai Plateau.

Only open after permission from the Deputy Conservator of Forests (Tel: 04259-225356), Pollachi.

2009: At present only one breeding female (Selvi aged about 47 years, calved six times) is available in the camp.

2016-06-23: The tranquilised wild elephant, nicknamed ‘Kattayan’ alias ‘Madukkarai Maharaj’, which died at the elephant camp at Varagliyar near Top Slip on Tuesday, two days after it was captured, had suffered multiple fractures on its forehead and other injuries while trying to free itself from the kraal, a post-mortem examination has revealed.
