Description

Wild Horizons Elephant Camp, located at Jijima Camp, in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe , was founded in 1997 and the first elephant arrived in 1997. The last elephant left in 2008. Wild Horizons Elephant Camp closed down in 2008.


Comments / pictures1997: a suitable location for the sanctuary needed to be established. Jijima Camp was nestled within the rich natural landscape bordering the town of Victoria Falls, and the breath taking natural scenery, abundant luscious vegetation and stretches of pristine wilderness made this the perfect place. Situated 25 kilometres west of Victoria Falls on 35,000 acres of wildlife estate, the elephants were owned by Ron White. The property belonged to Larry Cumming who was evicted from his home and game ranch by the War Veterans in 2002. In order to remain there, Wild Horizons had to pay these War Veterans a fee.

1999: Jake, Emily, Janet, Michael and Damiano came from the Zambezi Valley cull. They were moved from Dombowire Game Park, Bindura to Braeside Farm on November 24, 1998. A year later, Damiano, Jake and Michael came to The Elephant Camp on July 24, 1999.

2000: In 2000 Emily and Janet followed the boys to The Elephant Camp.

2004: Birth of Izibulo (meaning “firstborn”). Izibulo didn’t suckle for the first 11 hours after his birth, as new mom Emily didn’t know to move her leg forward to expose her teat.

2008-07-11: (interview with Shane White) : Rastas, our first baby that we hand-reared, drank about 24 000 litres of milk.
The operation is moving closer to Victoria Falls, onto a piece of land that was leased from Victoria Falls National Park, The elephant camp (Wild Horizons).
