A female elephant named ‘Madhu,’ belonging to the Muthiyangana Raja Maha Vihara in Badulla, died on Thursday (12) night after falling into pit in the Sewela Bokkkuwa area of Hasalaka.

The elephant had been brought to participate in the Esala Perahera festival at the Mahiyangana Rajamaha Vihara. The accident occurred while she was being loaded onto a truck for transport to the event.

Madhu, aged 30, had been gifted to the Badulu Muthiyangana Rajamaha Vihara when she was just six years old.
