DEATH OF 'DOLLY.'
South Perth Elephant's End.
Dolly, a four-year-old elephant in quarantine at the Zoo, South Perth, died yesterday after a day's illness. Her teener. Mr. W. Carlisle, had no idea what was amiss with her. Dr. H. W. Bennetts (veterinary pathologist) performed a postmortem examination, the result of which will be known soon.

Dolly was one of two baby elephants, the other being Betty, which were landed at Fremantle from the Minderoo on December 15 last year from the Sumatran jungles for Sole Bros, circus, which is now travelling in New South Wales, they had to go into quarantine at the Zoo. Mr. Carlisle, who is the elephant trainer for the circus, was in charge of the animals, and he said yesterday that they throve well till Sunday after noon, when Dolly suddenly developed an illness. He called in a veterinary surgeon but the animal did not rally and died soon after noon yesterday. The two animals were not insured. Mr. Carlisle said. They were bought to replace one of the circus elephants which died from accidental poisoning on the Great Western express a few months ago.

'Different to cutting up a sheep,' said Dr. Bennetts, as he toiled perspiringly with a big knife to carve up poor Dolly. Her companion Betty, tethered in a shed nearby, moved about very restlessly, and her trainer said she would have to be very carefully watched lest she break loose and get clear of the Zoo. He said he would present Dolly's carcass to the Zoo Museum.
