"Echo taught us much about elephants, about leadership, about maternal care, survival and about some of the concepts that are not supposed to be applied to animals: patience, loyality, love and joy."
Cynthia Moss

"Cynthia, a now famous elephant researcher, began her studies in Amboseli
National Park in southern Kenya in 1972. In late 1973, she recorded a family of seven members led by a Matriarch with two U-shaped nicks in her right ear. In April 1974, Cynthia and a colleague radio collared the Matriarch of the family, which was by then known by the codename EB. The Matriarch was soon named Echo because of the sound her radio collar made".

"Echo was supposedly born in 1945 and has been the Matriarch of the EB family for at least 30 years. Her oldest positively known calf was Erin, a daughter born about 1969. Her next calf was Eamon, a male born in 1976. Then Enid, another daughter, born in January 1982. Three years and three months later, Eliot, yet another daughter was born in April 1985. Ely, Echo’s famous son, was born crippled in 1990, which was documented in “Echo of the Elephants”. Four years later, during “Echo of the Elephants: The Next Generation” Ebony, a daughter, was born. Most recently, Emily Kate was born August 3, 2000. "

"When we completed Echo II in 1995 the EBs numbered 15. By the beginning of 2003 the family had grown to 24 and this was despite six young males leaving. Eric, Emo and Ewan had all gone independent shortly after Echo II was completed. Then much earlier than usual, Ely and his good friend and cousin, Esau left by the end of 2000. The average age of independence for males is 14."

" She had had her last calf in August 2000 when she was estimated to be 55 years old, which I thought was fairly amazing at the time. Now she was 58. I could have been overestimating her age, but not by more than maybe three years. Later I went back and looked carefully at my old ID photos of her from when I first met her in 1973. She looked about 28 years old. I compared what she looked like then to what her 21-year-old daughter Enid looks like now. Interestingly, they look remarkably similar, but the circumference of Echo's Tusks in the photos are thicker at the base, which is an indicator of age, and so I concluded that I couldn't have been overestimating her age by much if at all. Perhaps she was 25 then, which would make her 55 today and if she gets pregnant, 57 when she gives birth. However, if I didn't overestimate her age she'll give birth when she's nearly 60! Good old Echo."

2009: Dead

2012: "Echo's family, the EBs, have had seven new calves since November. Ebony, Eliot, Enid, Ella, Elettra, Echeri, and Eleanor have given birth to six males and one female. Eliot has the female, but this calf more than holds her own with her male cousins."
