In 1970, school children raised money for the zoo. Part of the $4,000 they raised was used to purchase Kimbo, Caldwell Zoos first elephant who arrived in 1971. She was three Feet tall and still feeding from a bottle. In the fall of 1977 she moved into the zoos new elephant house with two other new African cows. In the 1980s the zoo began its cooperation with other zoos for breeding efforts when they loaned Kimbo to the Fort Worth Zoo and received Tanya, an African cow, on loan from the St. Louis Zoo.
