Comments / pictures

On March 8, 1949, one of the largest animal shipments by air at the time brought 13000 pounds of animals to Idlewild Airport in New York from Singapore. The shipment of 133 animals captured in the jungles of India was consigned by Trefflichs Bird & Animal Company. Six 1500 pound baby elephants were included, three destined for Biller Brothers Circus and two to the St Louis Zoo. The elephants were temporarily housed at the Prospect Park Zoo in Bronx, New York, while the other animals, including *leopards, gibbons, monkeys and a python were transferred to Trefflichs quarters. The captain of the plane told of temporarily flying at a very high altitude several times to deplete the calves oxygen supply, making them sleepy and halting their playful antics. Jill and Judy, the two purchased by the zoo, arrived in St Louis the next month.
