Comments / pictures

Chai was a gift to the citizens of Seattle in 1980 from Thai Airways International and the Dusit Zoo (Bangkok, Thailand) to celebrate the inaugual service of the airline to the United States.

For six years, attempts were made to artificially inseminate Chai. She was unsuccessfully inseminated more than 50 times. As a result, she was transferred to the Dickerson Park Zoo for a year-long breeding loan.

Lately, she has been artificially inseminated, twice. The first (2006) inseminated baby was aborted at an early stage.

Chai was once more artificially inseminated in January 2008, but misscarried again in August 2008.

2016: Zookeepers discovered her in the elephant yard Saturday morning, January 30, 2016, at approximately 7:30 a.m.
