The female elephant named Bhavani was found in a collapsed state in the early hours of Monday. According to preliminary examination, infection in stomach was stated as the reason for the death.

Sources said that only after getting the pathological report could it be confirmed whether it was viral or bacterial infection.

The elephant was given food till Sunday afternoon. Though a team of veterinarians arrived at the Centre and examined the elephant, they did not find anything seriously wrong with the elephant. After some hours the elephant began to exhibit discomfiture and the death happened late in the night.

“The elephant calf was housed at the Centre only 20 days ago. It was the locals who found the elephant wandering in the tribal area of Tamil Nadu who informed the officials. At that time the elephant was in an ailing state without food for many days,’’ said Agasthyavanam Biological Park deputy warden Sivaprasad R.
